Current World Cup holders Argentina have produced some of the greatest players of all time and, while Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi have never played in the Premier League, plenty of other star Albiceleste players have.
Emiliano Martinez, who was one of his country’s most crucial players in Qatar, has made more than 100 combined appearances for Arsenal and Aston Villa in the division, while fellow Wold Cup winners Cristian Romero, Alexis Mac Allister and Lisandro Martinez turn out for Tottenham, Brighton and Manchester United respectively.
No less than 77 Argentinians have played at least once in the Premier League, with nine of them picking up winner’s medals.
But which player from the South American country has made more appearances than any of his compatriots? Let’s find out!
Amongst the current top ten, Sergio Aguero is the biggest name. He made 275 Premier League appearances for Manchester City, but that is only enough to clinch second place in this ranking.
Other memorable players include former City and United striker Carlos Tevez and ex-Newcastle United duo Fabricio Coloccini and Jonas Gutierrez.
However, it is Pablo Zabaleta, one of Aguero’s teammates at the Etihad Stadium, who sits on top of the pile thanks to his nine-year stint in Manchester and three seasons at West Ham.
Zabaleta is now 37 years old, and will turn 38 on January 16th. He was 23 when he made the switch to City in 2008, and he hung up his boots with the Hammers 12 years later.
Zabaleta made 303 Premier League appearances during his stay in England, the majority of which came for the Citizens.
155 of those games ended up as wins, while he was on the losing side 82 times. The full-back was not much of a goalscorer, but he did find the back of the net on nine occasions, while he also contributed 21 assists.
There was also a bit of an edge to him – he received 68 yellow cards and four reds during his Premier League career.
Zabaleta signed for City shortly after Sheikh Mansour’s takeover of the club, meaning the Argentinian was part of a very successful side.
He was a key member of the team that won City’s first-ever Premier League title in 2012, a trophy which was clinched in dramatic fashion as Roberto Mancini’s men came from behind in injury time to beat Queens Park Rangers 3-2.
Another league winner’s medal came Zabaleta’s way in 2014, while he also won an F.A Cup and two League Cups.
