Manchester City have won two out of two in their FIFA Club World Cup group-stage games, but where could the 2029 edition of the tournament take the Blues?
Pep Guardiola’s side have made light work of their start to the tournament in the United States, beginning the competition with a 2-0 win over Wydad AC in Philadelphia before a 6-0 thrashing of Al Ain in Atlanta.
City – alongside Chelsea – are representing the Premier League at the Club World Cup, where the eventual winners will win a significant cash windfall in the midst of the summer transfer window.
Manchester City have made a fast start to the summer window by securing the arrival(s) of Rayan Ait-Nouri, Marcus Bettinelli, Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki – who have all flown to the United States as part of the Club World Cup squad.
Cherki came off the bench against Al Ain on Sunday and notched his first goal in a Manchester City shirt in exquisite fashion, with Reijnders also drawing huge praise for his eye-catching performance in the middle of the park against Wydad AC.
Ait-Nouri produced a fine debut display at the weekend himself, going past his man with ease and exemplifying the qualities that made him attractive to the Manchester City board, who secured his signature from Wolves for £31 million at the start of June.
After a disappointing and uncharacteristically trophyless season, Guardiola has been given a new lease of life and an injection of fresh blood by the board, led by newly-appointed director of football Hugo Viana, who has replaced Txiki Begiristain in the buildup to the transfer window.
Manchester City are still expected to return to the market to step up their pursuit of a new right-back, with Newcastle’s Valentino Livramento identified as the ideal candidate to replace Kyle Walker, who is in the final year of his current deal and has been told to find a new club this summer.
Ben Jacobs is reporting that FIFA have received from each of the United States, Spain, Brazil and Morocco to host the 2029 edition of the Club World Cup, which has drawn widespread interest from clubs across the globe.
Manchester City have developed a global brand since the 2008 Abu Dhabi takeover, often going to Asia or the United States for pre-season as the club establishes a greater commercial foothold on the global football stage.
The club have come under criticism for their participation in the ongoing edition of the Club World Cup in the United States but chief executive Ferran Soriano has explained how Manchester City’s participation does not come at the cost of their local supporter base in England.
A notable financial boost is on offer for the eventual winners of the competition but more importantly, Guardiola will be very keen to lead his side all the way in the Club World Cup to instil some confidence in the dressing room after the slumps of the recent season.
