Where has Philippe Coutinho gone?
Philippe Coutinho is back where it all began. Sixteen years after making his professional debut, the Brazilian playmaker has officially signed a one-year contract with his boyhood club.
At 33, Coutinho is looking to revive a career marked by spectacular highs and painful lows. Having played for Liverpool, Inter, FC Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Aston Villa, and most recently Al-Duhail in Qatar, the Brazilian magician never quite managed to recapture the spark he showed at Anfield.
His move to Barcelona in 2018, for £142 million—a record for the Catalan club—will go down as one of the biggest flops in the transfer market. Hampered by a serious knee injury and chronic inconsistency, he never managed to impress in Spain. Loan spells in Munich and then Birmingham, at Aston Villa, also failed to kick-start his career.
His return to Vasco da Gama, confirmed by the club, marks a turning point. Philippe Coutinho is back home, in a calmer environment, hoping to rediscover the joy of playing. Absent from the Brazilian national team since 2022, Coutinho has scored 21 goals in 68 appearances for the Seleção. His future in yellow and green seems behind him. But with Vasco, he still has the chance to write one last beautiful chapter in his career.
