Elland Road could be expanded to over 50,000 as part of the club's latest plans
Leeds United's home matches could soon be taken to the next level if their plans to extend the capacity of Elland Road come to fruition.
Since being re-developed into an all-seater stadium in the 1990's following the results of the Taylor Report, the capacity of the Whites' home ground has been reduced, with a sold-out Elland Road currently able to hold 37,792 people.
In the near future though, this could be about to change, and it will be more in-line with the club's official highest-ever attendance of 57,892, that was set in 1967 against Sunderland.
Last week, it was reported that senior Leeds councillors were to be briefed on a big regeneration plan for Elland Road, which would see it become one of the major football stadiums and entertainment hubs in England.
Included in this, Leeds are set to submit a planning application to increase the capacity of Elland Road to 56,500, which, if successful, would move the stadium into the top five in the country when it comes to arenas that regular club football is played in.
Along with the capacity increase, plans will be unveiled to completely regenerate the land surrounding Elland Road, as well as a potential Mass Rapid Transit link for the area, which is all pretty exciting stuff.
Leeds fans will have to wait a bit longer to see the full vision of the plan though, with the executive board of Leeds council meeting on Wednesday 23 April to take in the report in full, and where more details will come to light on the plans to rebirth Elland Road.
And if the plans are approved by the council, then work on Elland Road's West Stand could start 'within the next 12 months', although there is no timescale right now on when the full expansion is planned to be completed for - the plans are though for the stadium to still be operational whilst works are ongoing.
With Elland Road being packed out for a number of years now, the plans to extend the capacity of Leeds' home stadium make complete sense, and with a powerhouse like 49ers Enterprises now owning the club, there is now the financial backing to fulfil the plans.
Many Leeds fans have been waiting for a season ticket for some time, and if the plans to expand the stadium's capacity by nearly 20,000 are passed, then it will allow for more United die-hards to watch them at home week in, week out.
