Rafael Leao has a release clause in his current contract with Milan, which is due to expire at midnight according to recent updates.

The clause became active on July 1 and will expire by midnight on Tuesday, July 16.

According to reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport, no clubs came anywhere near close to triggering Leao’s release clause, likely because of the hefty price tag attached to it: €175m.

Milan negotiated the release clause at the time of Leao’s most recent contract extension, which came just over a year ago in June 2023. It was a five-year deal, which ties the player to San Siro until the summer of 2028.

Leao also saw a significant increase in his wages at the time of his most recent contract extension, and is now reported to earn an annual sum of €5m plus bonuses.

The 25-year-old is still on holiday following Portugal’s exit from EURO 2024 10 days ago, and is expected to continue with his time off for a little while longer. He is, however, expected to be back in time to set off with the team for the Soccer Champions Tour in the United States in August.
