After an underwhelming campaign, which saw Boro fall short in their bid to reach the play-offs, there had been speculation surrounding the future of Carrick.

And it was announced on Wednesday that the hierarchy had made the decision to part company with the former Man Utd coach after discussions between Carrick and owner Steve Gibson.

Tommy Conway expresses disappointment at Michael Carrick’s Middlesbrough sacking

Carrick had been at Boro for over two-and-a-half years, and he was a popular figure with supporters for much of that period.

He played a key role in bringing Conway to the club from Bristol City last summer, and the Scotland international became an important figure in the XI under Carrick, scoring 13 times in 36 Championship appearances.

It appears Conway had a lot of respect for his manager as well, as he took to social media just hours after Carrick’s exit to thank the manager for how he had helped him.

Gutted I’m writing this. Thank you Gaffer for everything. Wishing you nothing but the best in the future.”

Middlesbrough will be an attractive option as managerial search starts

This is a nice touch from Conway, and he was a player who gave his all for Carrick this season.

But, in the bigger picture, the harsh reality is that Boro underachieved by finishing 10th in the table, as they had the quality to be pushing for the play-offs at least.

Having missed out on the top six last year as well, Carrick has fallen short over two years, and whilst he had a brilliant start to life on Teesside, and built a stylish, attacking team, this does feel like the right decision.

What you can say is that Carrick is leaving Boro in a healthy position, and whoever does take over will be landing a job with a talented squad, and promotion will once again be the aim for the 2025/26 campaign.

There is sure to be plenty of interest in the role, and it’s a crucial decision for Gibson as he looks to get the right man in as Boro look to end their stay outside the Premier League.
