The Champions League draw is upon us as the last-16 fixtures and much more are decided today, with Arsenal, Liverpool and Aston Villa all in the mix.
In the new league phase format, the top eight teams all progressed straight through to the last 16 while the teams that finished between ninth and 24th had to navigate a two-legged knockout play-off tie, with everyone else eliminated from Europe altogether.
Manchester City were convincingly beaten by Real Madrid in a blockbuster tie and Celtic endured heartbreak against Bayern Munich, while three big shocks saw AC Milan sent packing by Feyenoord, Club Brugge knock out Europa League winners Atalanta and PSV Eindhoven roar back to end Juventus’ hopes in what proved a disaster week for Italian sides.
Liverpool know they could face Paris Saint-Germain in the next stage, while Arsenal will be happy with how the results have fallen their way as they could face a reunion with ex-striker Robin van Persie.
The draw for the last 16 of the 2024/25 Champions League will take place today on Friday February 21, 2025 at 11am GMT, which is 12pm CET. UEFA’s headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland will host proceedings.
TV channel and live stream: The draw will be shown live on UEFA’s official website and YouTube channel for free, while there is live television coverage on TNT Sports 1 from 11am.
TNT Sports subscribers can also watch online via the Discovery+ app and website.
Live blog: Follow the draw live as it happens this morning with Standard Sport’s dedicated blog.
Because of the newly-introduced pairing system, Arsenal and Liverpool already know their two potential opponents in the last-16 draw.
As a result of finishing third in the league phase, the Gunners will either face Feyenoord (who knocked out AC Milan) or PSV Eindhoven (who eliminated Juventus).
Liverpool topped the standings and will therefore face either PSG or Benfica, who beat Brest and Monaco respectively in the play-off round.
For Aston Villa, it’s either Borussia Dortmund or Club Brugge, who overcame Sporting Lisbon and Atalanta this week.
