Nahki Wells has confirmed that he is departing Bristol City
Nahki Wells has issued a message to Bristol City supporters following confirmation that he is departing the club.
The 35-year-old’s time at Ashton Gate is over after last season, with the forward now set to become a free agent.
Wells has been with the Championship side since 2020, arriving from Burnley in the January transfer window.
The forward featured 39 times in the regular season as the team finished sixth in the table under Liam Manning, contributing 10 goals and four assists.
But the team’s 6-0 aggregate loss to Sheffield United in the play-off semi-finals has signalled the end of his time with the Robins.
Wells has issued a message to supporters following confirmation of his exit from Bristol City.
He has opened up on the connection he’s built with supporters, and that he will also cherish the memories he created during his time with the club.
“Over the past five-and-half years, I’ve built a massive connection with so many people at Bristol City, from the staff at the Robins High Performance Centre and the fans at Ashton Gate to the many amazing people in the local community,” said Wells, via the club’s official website.
“We’ve created so many special memories that will live with me forever.
“You’ve taken me in as one of your own and made my family feel at home from the moment I joined the club.
“The moment on the pitch at Ashton Gate finding out we’d made the play-off places is something I will never forget, celebrating something we worked so hard to achieve with the fans who backed us the whole way.
“I wish you all the best, up the City.”
Wells started his final game for Bristol City, playing 79 minutes in their play-off semi-final second leg against Sheffield United, in which the team lost 3-0 at Bramall Lane.
The forward’s final appearance at Ashton Gate was the reverse leg, where he played 45 minutes of their 3-0 defeat to Chris Wilder’s side.
Wells joined Bristol City in the 2020 January window with the team in the mix for a play-off place.
The forward scored five times from 17 appearances in his first half-season, with the team missing out on a top six finish by seven points, coming 12th.
He went on to feature on 214 occasions in the Championship for the Robins, with last season being the club’s best during that time, as Liam Manning’s side finished sixth.
However, Wells’ most prolific period for the Robins came during the 2022/23 campaign in which he produced 11 goals and six assists under Nigel Pearson.
The Robins finished 14th in the table, with the now 35-year-old finishing the season as their top scorer.
Despite being in the final years of his career, Wells remained a key part of the team up to his final months with the club.
Wells started 26 of his 39 regular league appearances in 2024/25, but will now seek the next step of his career away from Ashton Gate.
