Tottenham are closing in on a deal for West Ham United’s Mohammed Kudus.

The Ghanaian international looks like he will become the first player since Scott Parker in 2011 to make the switch from West Ham to Spurs.

Since joining West Ham in 2023, Kudus has had many special moments in claret and blue. His overhead kick at the Etihad and a spectacular solo run from inside his own half before scoring against Freiburg being among the most memorable.

Despite those special moments for West Ham, Kudus may stick in the mind of Spurs fans for another reason. He left Micky Van de Ven and Richarlison on the floor as well as shoving Pape Mate Sarr in the face in Tottenham’s 4-1 victory over the Hammers last season.

So why are Tottenham looking to bring in Mohammed Kudus?

Versatility

Over the last few transfer windows, Tottenham have made an effort to sign forwards that can play in many positions across the forward line and Kudus can do just that.

Following in the footsteps of Brennan Johnson, Mathys Tel and others, Kudus can operate on either wing and centrally if needed.

Last season Kudus played on the left, on the right, as a deeper midfielder, as a centre-forward and in attacking midfield too.

With Spurs suffering injuries across the front line last season, Kudus’ ability to slot into any area could make him a vital addition to the side.

Attacking depth

Spurs captain Heung-min Son has often been the talisman for the club, however last season showed that he is struggling to play every game for Tottenham.

Last season, seven Premier League sides scored more goals than Spurs and only Brennan Johnson managed over ten goals in the competition for Tottenham, so they are in need of some added firepower going forward.

Despite only getting nine combined goals and assists last season in the league, the Ghanaian international scored 18 goals and 10 assists in his first season for West Ham and if he can get back to that form, his addition will be a huge boost for Spurs.

Dribbling ability

Tottenham’s most-used left-winger was Heung-min Son last season, who only completed 28 dribbles according to Opta stats, while Mohammed Kudus completed the most successful dribbles in the league out of any player.

As per Fbref, the Ghanaian completed 92 take-ons last season – 63 more than the Spurs captain.

Kudus’ ability to take on defenders and get to the by-line works well with Spurs’ main right-winger Brennan Johnson, who has made a habit of popping up at the back post to score important goals which could set up an impressive partnership in north London, should Kudus play out on the left.

The concerns

Despite all of the positives Kudus will bring, and the fact he is still only 24 with lots of room to get better, there are some doubts that remain.

When he is on form, Kudus is outstanding but he has been known to go missing in games and there are concerns around his consistency.

There are also the disciplinary issues to worry about. Kudus’ outburst against Spurs showed he can be prone to losing his temper, something Spurs can ill afford.

Nonetheless, the hope is that Kudus can deliver on the promise he has shown at West Ham and help Spurs but last season’s issues behind them.
