According to a fresh report from SPORT, Luis Diaz is still Barcelona’s number one priority despite a recent meeting between sporting director Deco and Nico Williams’ agent, Felix Tainta.

Friday’s meeting created a buzz in the Barcelona camp, especially as Nico expressed strong interest in joining the Catalan giants.

The club appreciated the step taken by the Spanish international, and while the meeting reopened a door that was once closed, it’s still only slightly ajar.

Barcelona now know Nico wants to wear the Blaugrana shirt, but the sporting department remains focused on Diaz.

Why Diaz Is Ahead in Barça’s Plans

Luis Diaz ticks more boxes for Barcelona at this stage. Deco is a big admirer of the Colombian, and head coach Hansi Flick has also given his approval.

His ability to play both on the left wing and centrally makes him a versatile option for the new manager’s system. He has already shown his flexibility at Liverpool, stepping into a central role when needed.

Although Diaz is under contract at Liverpool until 2027, he has not hidden his dissatisfaction with the renewal offer he received from the English club.

He feels undervalued and has started to listen to offers. For him, Barcelona would be his preferred destination if he leaves Anfield this summer.

What is Liverpool’s stance?

Liverpool, for now, are not open to selling. However, the situation may change soon. The English club are close to finalising a €150 million deal for Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen and will need to balance their finances.

Still, they are demanding at least €80 million for Diaz, a figure Barcelona are unwilling to meet due to his age (28) and remaining contract length.

Barcelona are only willing to go up to €60 million, which is roughly the same as Nico Williams’ release clause at Athletic Club.

For now, the Colombian is still the preferred choice, but Barcelona are keeping the door open for Nico, especially since he has shown his desire to join.
