On Thursday evening, Arsenal unveiled their latest signing: Cristhian Mosquera.
While much of the attention centred around the No.3 shirt and the first glimpses of the defender in Arsenal colours, The Telegraph has dropped some intriguing claims about this transfer.
According to reports, Arsenal had their sights set high. They were prepared to spend significantly on a top-tier central defender. Interestingly, Mosquera was not their first-choice target. Instead, Arsenal were keen to land either Marc Guehi or Dean Huijsen, and discussions had begun with both camps. The Gunners made it known they were ready to pay whatever was necessary. Yet, even with those assurances, it was clear their chances of sealing either deal were slim.
The issue? With Gabriel Magalhães and William Saliba already anchoring Mikel Arteta’s back line, persuading Guehi or Huijsen to join without guaranteed minutes was always going to be difficult.
Then came the Mosquera opportunity. He was reportedly keen to join even with no guaranteed game time. Arsenal decided to commit, and they had never felt more convinced about a deal than this €15 million swoop, which they reportedly consider a shrewd piece of business.

They believe they have bulletproofed their back line. According to The Telegraph, the club think the Spaniard “can play as the right centre-back or the left, effectively covering for both Saliba and Gabriel, and has occasionally featured as a right-back.”
There is a genuine belief within the club that they may have landed another Saliba-like gem, one who fits seamlessly into Arteta’s project: “Mosquera’s style of play makes him perfectly suited to Arsenal’s high defensive line. He is quick enough to cover large spaces and is also an excellent one-versus-one defender, which should help him to nullify opposition counter-attacks. The similarities with Saliba, especially, are clear for all to see.”
In Takehiro Tomiyasu, Arsenal had a versatile option across the back four. Replacing him was always going to be tough, but in Mosquera, they believe they have found an ideal successor. A 21-year-old versatile enough to play almost anywhere in defence, with hopes of one day locking down a permanent role.
