Manchester City head coach Gareth Taylor is going into the final day of the season with a positive mindset, stating that being in the title race is everything that his side have worked for.

The Cityzens travel to Villa Park to face Aston Villa in their final fixture. Taylor’s side know that they must at least equal title rivals Chelsea’s result at Manchester United and eliminate a goal difference of two in the process.

While Chelsea go into the final day as title favourites, Manchester City head coach Taylor says that still being in the hunt for the championship is everything that his side wanted.

“It’d be huge [to win it], there’s no denying it,” Taylor said when speaking in the pre-match press conference. “It’s everything that we’ve worked for this season.

“We never really prioritise a competition but of course, the one competition that you want to win is the one that probably commands the best team to have won.

“We’ve really pushed the boundaries this season, we’ve really pushed the envelope on where we were in the summer or at the end of last season. To bring in one world-class player that unfortunately, we lost in January, shows the amount of improvement that we’ve made.

“All we wanted to be is in a position in the final game. I think the league is set up to be this way, the last four seasons have been down to the final game, probably none have been as close as this. That’s exciting and it’s good for us to know exactly what we need to do. What excites me the most is that the [Chelsea] game going the way that it did last night tells us exactly what we need to do. Things can change as the game goes on but what an opportunity for us and that is the really exciting thing.”

If both Manchester City and Chelsea win their respective matches, The Cityzens will have to have scored more goals if they are to be named champions. Taylor says that the preparation remains the same even though his side may have to score at least four goals at Villa Park.

He said “We prepare exactly the same way as we normally would. Our objective for every game is to try and score as many goals as we can and concede as few as we can.

“It sounds very simple and very logical but we never play for situations like holding on for a point, we try to attack games as best as we possibly can. We’ve done that really well this season and have scored four goals or more on 10 occasions this year, so we know that the capability is there.

“We know the team that we are playing against, we know that they won’t make it easy for us but we have more than enough within our ranks to be able to go and execute what we need to do at the weekend.”

Manchester City’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Aston Villa kicks-off at 3pm on Saturday afternoon.
