James Maddison revealed the inspiration behind the celebration after Pedro Porro scored the third goal in our 4-0 win against City at the Etihad on Saturday night.
It was a sweet strike from the Spanish defender, who timed his run to join a counter attack to perfection, allowing Dominic Solanke to roll the ball into his path for a first-time blast past Edersen from 12 yards for 3-0 after 52 minutes. Madders also scored twice in an outstanding display on his birthday, with Brennan Johnson capping a memorable evening with the fourth goal in added time.
After Pedro’s strike, Madders joined the celebration as he, Pedro and Dominic all sat down in front of our jubilant fans in the away end.
Was it a nod to Mario Kart? James: “Correct!” said Madders on our Review Show. “We’ve been battering it, honestly! Every coach journey, every plane journey, me, Pedro, Dom, Brennan, Archie and Brandon, we’ve a good little Mario Kart squad, and it gets competitive, I’ll tell you! We said, if we get the chance, we do it. And it was perfect that Pedro scored, because he plays all the time - great finish, and we got to do it.”
