West Ham United have reignited their interest in Lille striker Jonathan David, looking to bolster their attacking options this summerThe Guardian.
The Canadian international (59 caps, 31 goals) is available on a free transfer and has emerged as a prime target for new West Ham head coach Graham Potter, who is eager to address the club’s struggles in front of goal.
The 25-year-old has recorded 20 goals and nine assists in 35 appearances for Lille this season, playing a critical role in helping his club reach the last 16 of the Champions League.
He is a proven goalscorer, making him a highly coveted asset, and West Ham face stiff competition to secure his signature.
The Hammers were previously interested in signing David last summer but were deterred by Lille’s asking price. However, with the forward now available on a free transfer, the East London club have resumed their pursuit and are closely monitoring developments.
One potential stumbling block remains David’s wage demands, which could pose a challenge given West Ham’s financial constraints.
West Ham struggled to strengthen the attack in recent seasons. Niclas Fullkrug has struggled for form and fitness since arriving from Borussia Dortmund last summer and is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury.
Meanwhile, West Ham stalwart Michail Antonio remains unavailable following a car crash in December, while Danny Ings has failed to make a lasting impact since his arrival two years ago.
Potter sought reinforcements in January and secured Brighton & Hove Albion striker Evan Ferguson on loan. However, West Ham do not hold an option to buy the young Republic of Ireland striker, making a permanent deal unlikely.
Potter is eager to bring in fresh attacking talent, and David would be a massive boost for West Ham.
