West Ham have appointed Moritz Steidten as head of international scouting and recruitment, despite uncertainty over brother Tim’s future as the club’s technical director.

Tim Steidten joined the Hammers set-up last summer and is understood to have recommended his brother, who has spent the last seven years working as a scout at German club Werder Bremen and started with the Hammers last month, for the role.

It is the latest evidence of Steidten’s growing influence behind the scenes at West Ham, with Maximilian Hahn also making the switch from his former club Bremen to take up the post of head of technical scouting and analysis at the London Stadium earlier this year.

However, there has been speculation that Steidten could leave the Premier League club this summer, having been touted for the vacant sporting director’s role at Liverpool.

The German previously worked alongside Xabi Alonso - the early frontrunner to succeed outgoing Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp - at Bayer Leverkusen and last week called the links “an honour”.

There were suggestions of tension between Irons boss David Moyes and Steidten over transfer targets throughout last summer, though the window ultimately proved a success following the signings of Edson Alvarez, James Ward-Prowse and Mohammed Kudus. In January, however, the Hammers failed in their search for a wide-forward, with Manchester City loanee Kalvin Phillips the month’s only new arrival.
