West Ham and two other Premier League clubs consider move for Werder Bremen’s Romano Schmid | OneFootball

Werder Bremen’s Deichstube fan site is currently confirming rumors originating in the Guardian regarding Premier League interest in Austrian attacker Romano Schmid. Deichstube cites Schmid’s recent change of representation to a London-based agency as one reason why a move to West Ham United, Aston Villa, or Fulham may be materializing. Schmid (€17m) is the highest valued player on his Bundesliga club’s squad.

Rumors linking Schmid with Villa are not new. The London-club links – reported by journalist Jacob Steinberg – make sense in the context of Schmid’s agent switch. The now 22-times-capped Austrian international initially signed on with famous German journalist and author Raphael Hönigstein at the beginning of the year, then made the abrupt change to London’s renowned “CAA Base” ten days ago.

Schmid clearly aims to earn a salary more in line with his current estimated market value. After another fine season with Bremen (five league goals and five assists) Schmid has raised his valuation from €10m to €17m in the last 12 months. The last time Schmid signed a contract extension with Bremen (in December of 2023) he was valued at only €6.5m.

Steinberg reports that West Ham are considering a €15m move for the 25-year-old. Villa and Fulham, in the words of the British journalist, are “monitoring” Schmid’s situation. Given Schmid’s clear desire to angle for a better deal amid all such moving components, one doesn’t expect a quick resolution to the matter.
