Kicker reports that Werder Bremen will have more very grim injury news to confirm soon after results of a Wednesday MRI revealed that talismanic wingback Mitchell Weiser suffered an ACL tear in his knee. Over the last four years, Weiser has become an immensely important figure for Werder both on and off the pitch.
Bremen already find themselves without lead striker Marvin Ducksch (calf injury) and influential attacking midfielder Jens Stage (foot stress fracture) as the season draws nearer. The serious nature of Weiser’s injury will keep the 31-year-old sidelined for six months or more. Newly appointed Bremen head coach Horst Steffen recently revealed that he had big plans for Weiser this season.
Weiser turned in another successful season as a wingback for Bremen last year, scoring five goals and registering ten assists on the right-hand-side of previous head coach Ole Werner’s 3-5-2. Sometimes, however, Werner would move him up to the wing or even the eight position in a 4-2-3-1. Steffen made clear that’s what he envisioned for Weiser at a recent media round.
“Basically, I see him [Weiser] a little further forward,” Steffen – quoted by Kicker – said. “He’s more dangerous in front of goal there.“
