Feyenoord goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther admitted that ‘everything went well’ during the 1-0 victory over AC Milan at De Kuip last night.

Milan became the first side to lose a knockout stage match in the European Cup/UEFA Champions League against Feyenoord since Coleraine on 2 October 1974 as they were beaten in the first leg of the play-off round tie.

The only goal of the game came after just three minutes and in truth it will be one that Mike Maignan will rue having let in. Igor Paixao’s shot from range seemed to take a bounce that surprised him and he could only palm it into the back of the net at the near post.

At the other end his opposite number had a quiet night but kept a clean sheet still, something that seemed unlikely given that Feyenoord had conceded 21 goals in their eight games in the ‘league phase’.

Wellenreuther spoke after the game to ESPN to reflect on what was a memorable night for him personally but also for the whole club, with his comments relayed by MilanPress.

“Today everything went well. Although a 2-0 would have been better for next week. Tuesday will be a difficult match. We will see how much this advantage can be worth,” he said.

“When you keep a clean sheet it is always a good match. The whole team was strong today and we defended well. Everyone gave their all and that is the most important thing.”
