It's not very often you see the backpass rule deployed in a game of professional football.

But that's exactly what happened during Chelsea's game with Aston Villa in the Premier League as goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez was punished for picking up a ball played back to him by Pau Torres.

It's the second time this season that Villa have been penalised for a bizarre incident, after Tyrone Mings conceded a penalty for handball after picking up a goal kick from Martínez inside the box.

The backpass rule means the opposing team is awarded an indirect free-kick from inside the box, meaning the Aston Villa 'keeper had to stop a shot blasted at him from close range from Cole Palmer.

Luckily for the Argentinian, he managed to save that shot and prevent Villa from going even further behind, though Enzo Fernandez did put them 2-0 up minutes later.
