Manchester City are starting to “build something” again in the Premier League this season, Pep Guardiola has insisted, despite losing 2-0 to Liverpool on Sunday.

The Premier League champions made it seven matches in a row without a win at the weekend having been comfortably dismissed by Arne Slot’s men who have now opened up an 11-point gap on Pep Guardiola’s players.

With four matches in a row across the Premier League in particular, many are wondering whether it is finally the end of Manchester City’s era of dominance, having won all of the last four English top-flight titles in a feat never-before-achieved.

However, despite the largely poor showing at Anfield, particularly in the first-half, manager Pep Guardiola has joined Ruben Dias in taking the positives from the performance and pointing towards improvements across the coming matches.

Speaking to reporters after City’s seventh consecutive game without a win, Guardiola concluded that he saw signs of a team coming back to their best on Sunday, particularly with key players returning.

“I saw how Ruben [Dias] came back. How good Nathan [Ake] controlled [Mohamed] Salah. I want the team back. I want the players back. Three or four players came back [from injury] and the feeling from here is we started to build something,” said Guardiola.

“From here we’re going to try to build, win games and regain our confidence. Then we are team and it’s fantastic. I’m sitting here defending what we defend because these players give everything.”

The Manchester City manager continued, “The best years I lived in Manchester, and I have to find a solution to try to win games. If we gave up at Anfield and are not consistent, you go home with a terrible result. The team was there all the time.”

Manchester City will return to action at the Etihad Stadium this week with Nottingham Forest the visitors on Wednesday night, before attentions will then turn to a challenging away trip to Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon.
