‘We are going to analyze things calmly’ – Deco reveals his stance regarding 28-year-old Barcelona captain’s renewal | OneFootball

Since the start of 2025, FC Barcelona have done a lot of work to ensure the continuity of some of the most important players in their squad. During this time, the Catalans renewed the contracts of several players, including Ronald Araujo, Pedri, Gavi, Pau Cubarsi, Inigo Martinez, and Lamine Yamal.

However, there are still some folders open in this regard, as some players had postponed their renewal negotiations till the end of the 2024-25 season.

One such player was the midfielder Frenkie de Jong, who has only one year left on his contract with the Blaugrana club, but who is yet to arrive at a renewal agreement with the club.

Negotiations between the two sides have been far from smooth up to now, as the player did not even respond to an offer sent to him by the club in recent months, and this offer was later rescinded by Barcelona.

One bone of contention between the two parties is the wages that were deferred from the midfielder’s payroll during the pandemic. The Catalans want the Dutchman to give up on these deferred wages, and naturally, the midfielder does not want to do so.

With only one year left on his contract, the Blaugranes are keen to arrive at an agreement with him for a renewal to avoid losing him for free next year. If they are unable to renew Frenkie, they will likely look to sell him this summer.

Despite his uncertain future, De Jong was able to significantly improve his performances in the latter parts of the 2024-25 season and became a fixed starter for Hansi Flick.

Deco reveals his stance on this renewal

In such a context, Deco recently appeared in an interview with La Vanguardia (h/t Fabrizio Romano) and confirmed his desire to retain the Dutchman in his team going forward. In this regard, the Barcelona official said:

“This is the de Jong we want. We want him to stay with us… He has one more year under contract with us, and we are going to analyze things calmly.”

Hopefully, the two sides will arrive at an agreement soon, and Barcelona will continue to enjoy the services of Frenkie de Jong in their midfield.
