Barcelona’s 1-1 draw against Real Betis ended with more than just disappointment on the scoreboard.
After the final whistle, emotions ran high among the Barça players, particularly due to the limited added time and a last-minute corner opportunity that never materialised.
The team felt there was still enough time to fight for a winner, and the decision to end the match without allowing that chance sparked frustration.
Among those most affected was Brazilian winger Raphinha, who could not contain his anger. His protests escalated quickly, and what began as verbal complaints soon required the intervention of his teammates and staff.
First, Robert Lewandowski tried to calm him down, followed by manager Hansi Flick, who physically placed himself between Raphinha and the assistant referee in an attempt to prevent further confrontation.
Eventually, captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen also stepped in to guide the player off the pitch.
The situation nearly got out of hand when Raphinha, in the heat of the moment, angrily brushed off Ter Stegen’s attempt to calm him by placing a hand on his chest.
It was clear that the Brazilian’s frustration was directed at the officiating, not his teammates, but the intensity of his reaction raised concerns.
Thankfully, both Flick and Ter Stegen managed to escort him to the dressing room before things escalated any further.
Despite the heated scene, referee Gil Manzano’s post-match report made no mention of the incident.
There was no record of any misconduct by Raphinha or any other Barça player, which suggests that the club may have narrowly avoided disciplinary action.
Flick even addressed the situation with a touch of irony in his post-match comments, deflecting attention by claiming, “He was angry with me, not with the referee, he was yelling at me.”
In the end, Raphinha’s outburst will likely be viewed as a moment of emotional release rather than misconduct. No sanctions are expected, and the focus will now shift back to football as Barça prepare for the challenges ahead.
