Villarreal have reached an agreement on personal terms with Renato Veiga as talks continue over a deal to sign the Chelsea defender.

Veiga is keen to leave Chelsea on a permanent basis after returning from a loan spell at Juventus.

The Portugal international joined Chelsea from Basel last summer, but was loaned to Juventus in January after struggling for a regular role. He is now exploring a permanent exit with no plans to reintegrate the 22-year-old back into the squad.

Atletico Madrid saw an approach fall through earlier in the window, though La Liga remains a potential destination. Fabrizio Romano is reporting that personal terms have been agreed with the centre-back as discussions continue with Chelsea over a fee.

The current package from Villarreal is worth €24m (£20.7m) plus add-ons, with Chelsea demanding a figure of €30m (£25.9m). That figure would represent an instant profit for Chelsea who paid around £12m to sign Veiga 12 months ago.

Villarreal are hoping to add the versatile defender to their squad as The Yellow Submarine prepare to return to the Champions League this season.

Veiga, meanwhile, wants to secure a regular centre-back role to boost his chances of making the Portugal squad for next summer’s World Cup.

Chelsea working on outgoings to free up funds

Veiga is one of several players Chelsea are looking to offload before September’s deadline. The club have received approaches from several clubs for Christopher Nkunku, while Nicolas Jackson could also depart for the right fee.

Other expected exits include Raheem Sterling, as Enzo Maresca looks to reduce his squad and bring in funds.

The permanent sales Veiga and Nkunku could free room to finalise deals for Alejandro Garnacho and Xavi Simons.
