Enzo Maresca’s post match press conference on Saturday after the FA Cup defeat attracted quite a lot of bad attention from Chelsea fans.
After a tame defeat to Brighton, the manager claimed he saw positives in going out:
“If there is something good after a defeat is now we can be focused on the Premier League and Conference.”
As you’d expect, fans reacted badly. That is loser talk, and sums up the whole problem with this project. Trophies are no longer the main concern, and going out (especially is such weak fashion) is now just accepted.
On the London is Blue podcast they explained just why they found it so frustrating.
You can see their thoughts in the clip embedded here, with these quotes coming after 12 minutes:
The London is Blue podcast discuss a defeat.
“No [we can’t accept that reasoning]. We needed that. This was a part of the business plan. We needed the revenue, this was a part of how we were going to get minutes for other players. Not good enough,” Dan Verlaney pointed out, speaking for many fans.
“And it’s not like we walked into Man City’s starting XI. This was Brighton, beat up. Their list of injuries is far greater than ours. It’s a young squad, they trusted a lot of young players… you’ve got teenagers in there. They were extremely young as well,”
The players out there on the pitch didn’t look committed, and while that’s partly on them, it’s also on the club culture that’s being created right now with expectation lowering comments like those from a manager who is supposed to set the tone.
What’s the point in “being focused on the Premier League” if you’re going to perform like this? You won’t even make the top 4 with performances like that.
