Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario has said the club have ‘written history’ after winning the Europa League this season.

Ange Postecoglou’s side ended a 17-year wait for a major trophy after beating Manchester United 1-0 at the San Mames Stadium on Thursday evening. Spurs had lost their four previous major finals without scoring a goal, but produced a disciplined performance to end their drought.

It was a final that lacked quality, with Manchester United dominating the ball (73%) but lacking cutting edge. Brennan Johnson scrambled in the only goal of the game in the first half, before Spurs produced an un-Postecoglou-like performance to defend deep and in numbers to grind out the result.

Micky van de Ven made one outstanding clearance off the goal-line to deny Rasmus Hojlund, while Vicario made a stunning stop from Luke Shaw in stoppage time.

Spurs secure silverware to end a torrid season on a high, with the additional carrot of Champions League qualification. It’s a first European trophy for the North Londoners in 41 years.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Vicario said the squad have wrote their name in the history of the club: “It is unbelievable. We have written history, this group of players has written history.

“There was also one Micky van de Ven save. On the line. We knew before the game we needed the help from everyone and we did it. Now we celebrate.”
