Liverpool’s Transfer Window Verdict: Isak Arrival, Guehi Setback and Wirtz’s Potential

Liverpool’s latest transfer window has been a statement of intent. After several quiet summers, the Premier League champions spent more than £400m to reshape Arne Slot’s squad, breaking the British transfer record twice in one window. Alexander Isak’s arrival from Newcastle was the standout deal, while the signing of Florian Wirtz has been hailed as a transformative addition.

It was not all smooth sailing. Liverpool failed in their late attempt to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, and several familiar faces departed, but the consensus among analysts is that the squad looks stronger and more balanced than last season. The Athletic’s Simon Hughes, Gregg Evans and Andy Jones provided their assessments of what this window means for Liverpool’s ambitions.

Isak’s Signing and What It Means

Simon Hughes noted that Isak’s transfer was uncharacteristic of Liverpool. “The fee is monumental but, strangely, he does not arrive as the solution to an outstanding problem,” he said. Evans described the deal as “huge for Liverpool,” adding: “It means they have significantly strengthened the frontline at a time when they are already the team to beat in the Premier League. Isak is one of the best in the world so his arrival will take the pressure off Hugo Ekitike.”

Jones said Liverpool’s two marquee additions could be transformative: “It is rare to add one of those every summer, Liverpool have added two in Isak and Wirtz, who can win games on their own.”

Isak’s actions at Newcastle, where he reportedly pushed for a move, were also discussed. Hughes drew parallels with Virgil van Dijk’s move from Southampton: “This sort of behaviour is not a new thing. It would worry me more if Isak had caused problems at Newcastle before deciding he wanted to leave.” Evans acknowledged some concerns but said: “Liverpool supporters won’t care as they’re getting one of the sharpest strikers in the world.”

Guehi Blow and Defensive Depth

The collapse of Guehi’s transfer was described as a significant setback. Evans said: “A massive blow, especially as it was so close to completion. Guehi’s arrival would have given Liverpool three strong central defensive options.” Hughes pointed out that Liverpool “aren’t shorter on numbers compared to last season but they aren’t necessarily stronger either.”

Jones suggested this leaves the club vulnerable: “It opens up Liverpool to being left short if injuries hit and he is a level above back-up options Joe Gomez and Leoni.”

Wirtz’s Impact and Elliott’s Departure

Wirtz’s arrival was widely regarded as the most influential signing. “Granted, he’s had a quiet start but when he settles, I think Liverpool have a star,” Hughes said. Evans and Jones echoed that sentiment, with Jones adding that Liverpool’s structure “has shifted for the 22-year-old to become the central figure of the new-look side.”

Harvey Elliott’s departure to Aston Villa was met with disappointment. “He clearly wants to stay but he needs to play,” Hughes commented. Evans said his exit “felt like his time to move after a stop-start season,” while Jones described him as “living his dream playing for the club he supports,” but acknowledged his profile didn’t fit Slot’s plans.

Balancing Expectations and Slot’s Pressure

Liverpool’s spending has increased scrutiny on Slot. Hughes argued that supporters are patient: “He’s just delivered the title in his first season. FSG will appreciate that this is the start of a new cycle.” Evans agreed that Liverpool “are now expected to get better because of the huge outlay,” while Jones said: “Spending big money always does [add pressure]… this is now being his squad rather than Jurgen Klopp’s, so he has to make it work.”

Predictions for the campaign remain optimistic. Hughes believes Liverpool can win back-to-back league titles: “Those challenging them domestically do not appear to have improved sufficiently enough to catch up.” Evans expects “at least the semi-finals of the Champions League,” while Jones called Liverpool “favourites to retain their title.”

Our View – Anfield Index Analysis

This window has energised Liverpool supporters. Isak’s signing feels like a turning point, a declaration that Liverpool are willing to compete financially with their rivals. The addition of Wirtz, a generational talent, alongside Ekitike and a refreshed attack makes this squad look more dynamic and versatile than it has in years.

Fans are already dreaming of the combinations Slot could deploy. Salah’s experience, Wirtz’s creativity and Isak’s ruthlessness make Liverpool a frightening proposition. Supporters will also take heart from the fact that this investment is part of a longer-term vision, not a quick fix. Slot’s influence is clear: his emphasis on tactical flexibility, squad depth and youth development is reflected in the club’s transfer decisions.

Missing out on Guehi was frustrating, especially with concerns about injuries to Ibrahima Konaté and Gomez. However, there is a belief that Liverpool’s ambition and recruitment strategy signal a willingness to address gaps in January if needed.

Liverpool fans can sense momentum building. Back-to-back titles are a realistic goal, and this squad has the talent and mentality to make a serious Champions League run. This window feels like the start of a new chapter, and optimism is rightly high.
