Ruud van Nistelrooy is confident Manchester United can climb back to the top of English and European football.

Van Nistelrooy will take charge of Manchester United for this evening’s Carabao Cup tie with Leicester, having been placed in interim charge of the club after the sacking of Erik ten Hag on Monday.

The Dutchman returned to the Red Devils as an assistant coach in the summer, having had a successful five-year spell with the club during his playing career.

Ahead of facing the Foxes, Van Nistelrooy outlined his reason for returning and the belief he has that Manchester United can return to former heights. He said he believes the club “can be unstoppable” when “players, staff and supporters pull together”.

“When I returned in the summer as Erik’s assistant, it was because I believe that Manchester United can climb back to the levels that I knew here as a player,” Van Nistelrooy wrote in his programme notes before facing Leicester at Old Trafford.

“I still have that belief, but it will take time and a lot of hard work.

“We’ve seen the squad’s potential at times this season, but clearly not often enough.”

United are in negotiations to appoint Sporting Lisbon head coach Ruben Amorim as the club’s new manager. The 39-year-old is expected to bring several members of his coaching staff with him to Old Trafford, with Van Nistelrooy’s future uncertain.
