Former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has criticised Manchester United’s commercial focus and the club’s recruitment process, insisting the manager should decide on signings.

Van Gaal discussed the fortunes of his former team, who ended the Premier League campaign 15th in the table. It was the club’s lowest league finish since last being relegated in 1974.

The Dutchman believes Manchester United continue to prioritise commercial success over football matters. It is the second time Van Gaal has criticised the club’s commercial focus, after warning compatriot Erik ten Hag against taking the role in 2022. He also hit out at the club’s recruitment process and believes Ruben Amorim should be in charge of signings.

The 73-year-old, who won the FA Cup during his time at Old Trafford, believes rivals Liverpool are a template that United should follow.

“It is still a commercial club. It’s not a football club,” Van Gaal said to Sky Sports.

“I’ve said that before and that’s always difficult. When it’s not the manager deciding which players have to come, it’s very difficult.

“I think that’s the way (managers choosing signings) that it should be because then you can fire the manager if he doesn’t get results. But when other people buy the players, then you have a problem. You need to have the knowledge of the manager, the orientation of the manager, because he has to train them. I think it should always be like that.

“Arne Slot (Liverpool manager) is the one who says to his technical manager that he has to buy this player. Pay attention to it.”
