After their humbling defeat in El Clasico last weekend, Real Madrid were scheduled to return to La Liga action this Sunday. The Merengues were set to face another difficult opponent on the road, as their next match against Valencia is set to take place at Mestalla.

However, it is still not certain that this match will be played this Sunday, as Diario AS reports that Valencia CF has requested La Liga to postpone this match.

This request has come in light of the natural catastrophe DANA, which has devastated the entire province of Valencia. The flash floods caused by this weather pattern have already caused widespread destruction in several parts of Spain, and the Spanish government has already announced the next three days to be a period of mourning.

Valencia were set to play in a Copa del Rey match tonight, which has also been postponed by RFEF, and the club has now requested La Liga to do the same as it might be days and weeks before the region recovers its infrastructure. Levante UD also had its Copa del Rey match postponed because of this natural disaster,

On their part, Real Madrid are willing to extend all the possible cooperation with the distressed club and will agree on any decision taken by the league authorities. The Merengues also published an official statement to show solidarity with the affected regions and people and also held a minute of silence before starting training in today’s session.

Real Madrid fans and players would have been gunning to get back to the pitch and show a response to the events of the last few days, including the humiliating defeat to Barcelona. But there is no doubt that this natural disaster has already caused a lot of fatalities and destruction, and football needs to take a secondary role before the suffering experienced in these parts of Spain.
