The United States beat Trinidad and Tobago 5-0 in their first match of the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Scorers: Tillman 16', 41', Agyemang 44', Aaronson 82', Wright 84'
The United States took the lead after Trinidad defender Alvin Jones struggled to control a pass in front of his 18-yard box, leading to a delicately lofted cross from Jack McGlynn and an easy finish from Malik Tillman.
The US took advantage of another Alvin Jones mistake as he played a woeful back-pass directly to Diego Luna, setting up another simple tap-in for Tillman's second goal of the match.
The Americans added a third just before half-time as Diego Luna's shot deflected kindly off of Patrick Agyemang's foot and through the defender legs.
Brenden Aaronson came on in the second half and scored with a right-footed shot which deflected through the goalkeeper's arms.
Finally, Haji Wright added a fifth with a shot directly into the bottom-right corner to cap off a strong showing for the hosts in the opener.
Ultimately, after difficult losses to Turkey and Switzerland, Mauricio Pochettino's young squad bounced back with a comfortable victory to open their Gold Cup account.
The United States will hope for to replicate this performance when they play tournament invitees Saudi Arabia on Thursday in the second match of Group D.
