United's Under-15s win Poolfoot Cup | OneFootball

Entering a Champions League-style competition, the Toon teenagers advanced into the quarter-final stages on Saturday after finishing in top spot of the 16-team group, recording three wins in five unbeaten matches, each consisting of 20 minute-games, at Fleetwood Town's Poolfoot Farm without conceding a single goal.

Newcastle's youngsters, who had won the inaugural competition in 2021, reached the semi-final stages on Sunday following a 2-0 victory against Blackburn Rovers before booking their place in the final by defeating Skouted FC 2-1 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, with teenage goalkeeper George Mair recording two saves in the shoot-out.

United then won their second Poolfoot Cup in their last four seasons after beating their Boro counterparts in the final 3-2 on penalties following a goalless draw, with Mair making another strong stop in the shoot-out and Magpies teenager Jayden Koussou picking up the Player of the Tournament award.

Under-15s Lead Coach, Graeme Coulson, told newcastleunited.com: "It's been a brilliant season for the Under-15s. We qualified for an international tournament for the first time and also won the Floodlit Cup First Stage group which put us into the Second Stage.

"The boys have been over to Portugal and despite getting beat in the quarter-finals of the Iber Cup, they went from having that adversity of losing over there to coming back here, taking that experience on, and winning the tournament four weeks later.

"I've been with the group for a year and a half now as I was the Under-14s Lead Coach before taking over the Under-15s at the start of the season so it's a really nice way to finish my time with the group before passing them onto under-16 level."
