The dust has settled on the 2023/24 Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League group stages, and UEFA has updated its club coefficients, painting a picture of European football’s power balance.

The coefficient ranks European leagues based on their collective success in UEFA competitions. These coefficients determine the seeding of each club in relevant UEFA competition draws.

The final season points are used for allocations the season after i.e. the final coefficient for this year will affect seeding for the 2025/26 season.

Treble winners and current UCL holders Manchester City perch on top of the coefficient standings with 141 points. They won all six group games and look well-placed to defend their title in May 2024.

Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich secured second place on the rankings, with a coefficient of 136. The Bavarians won five and drew one of their six group games, emerging atop the standings.

14-time UCL winners Real Madrid sit in third place with a coefficient of 123 points. They are one of the most successful clubs in European competition history and are always a threat to win any competition they enter.

Paris Saint-Germain are fourth, while Liverpool are in fifth place with a coefficient of 107 points.

Chelsea, who failed to qualify for any of the European competitions this season, are in eighth place with a coefficient of 96, a place ahead of Manchester United, who crashed out of the UCL embarrassingly, languishing at the bottom of their group.

Interestingly, Arsenal, despite recent successes, find themselves as low as 21st on the table despite finishing on top of their group, ahead of Lens, Sevilla, and PSV Eindhoven.

West Ham United, Europa Conference League champions, are 24th in the standings.

The current rankings will likely change significantly throughout the knockout stages of the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League.

Clubs that perform well in these competitions will see their coefficients rise, while those eliminated early will see their coefficients fall.

With the UEFA Champions League restructuring on the horizon, two high-stakes coefficient battles are ongoing.

Two of Europe’s domestic leagues will receive an extra CL place as part of the incoming expansion to a 36-club competition.

These battles will dictate how many teams from different leagues secure coveted Champions League spots next season.

The fight for the coveted fifth Champions League slot has been gripping.

The primary battlefield has been German, Italian, English, and Spanish soil. However, France and the Netherlands have recently injected an extra layer of tension, aiming to snag the fifth spot ahead of the UCL format changes.

England lost ground after Man United and Newcastle United crashed out early. However, Aston Villa, Brighton, Liverpool and West Ham finished on top of their groups.

Ahead of the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League campaign

The Champions League group stage gets a revamp in 2024/25, with four extra teams joining the fight for glory.

The top four associations (England, Spain, Italy, and Germany) will send four representatives each, while France and Netherlands clash for the coveted fifth spot with four group stage entries.

Associations 6-15 will still have two teams in the mix.
