FLW's Sunderland pundit gave his take on the incident involving Wilson Isidor and Joe Rodon last night.
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Pascal Struijk's and Joe Rothwell's introduction from the bench condemned Sunderland to a fifth defeat of the season as the Leeds United substitutes combined twice to secure a comeback win against the Black Cats.
Wilson Isidor gave the visitors the lead in the first half with a goal that the great Didier Drogba would be proud of as he pinned Ethan Ampadu before spinning him and firing past Illan Meslier into the far corner.
However, in the second half, Regis Le Bris' side continued to concede set pieces, and they were made to pay as two expertly delivered crosses from Rothwell found Struijk, who made no mistake in converting to seal Leeds a 2-1 win.
In a fiery affair, the goals weren't the only talking points, as an off-the-ball incident sparked outrage in the Sunderland fan base for the lack of equality from the referee. Right at the end of the first half, goalscorer Isidor squared up to Joe Rodon after he pushed Luke O'Nien over and both players moved their heads towards each other. This led to frustration among Sunderland supporters, as Stuart Atwell handed a yellow card to the French striker but surprisingly chose not to issue the same punishment to Leeds' centre-back.
When asked whether Rodon should have been carded, Football League World's Sunderland fan pundit, Jordan Newcombe answered: "Yes 100%.
"I know Luke O'Nien can be aggravating when it comes to a game of football, and you do want those players. It was funny to see O'Nien do that, but at the other end, he (Rodon) pushed O'Nien to the floor, and it all kicked off.
"He shouldn't have pushed him over and retaliated; he should have just let it be. Personally, I thought the card went to O'Nien, but it turns out it went to Isidor.
"He (Rodon) should have got a card, and in my opinion, it should have been an O'Nien carded instead of Wilson.
"It’s typical for Sunderland that we come up against a 12th man each game - and that is the referee. When the other teams have the 12th man, the game can be gone. It shouldn't be happening, and the ref needs to be fair. There were a few challenges last night where it should have been a card and a foul, but he didn’t give it."
As mentioned by Newcombe and echoed by many other Sunderland fans on social media, it does seem to be a strange decision by Atwell.
However, Regis Le Bris' side entered Elland Road with a clear game plan and that was to be physical and slow the Whites down at every opportunity.
This physicality arguably crossed the line, and by the end of the 90 minutes, the Black Cats had been shown six yellow cards, compared to just three for Leeds.
