If Milan want to start climbing the league table, there is only one possible outcome against Empoli at San Siro tonight: to win.
As Tuttosport (via MilanNews) write this morning, the gap from the top spots does not please anyone, especially Paulo Fonseca. However, he remains optimistic and confident for the future because he sees his team growing.
The defensive problems remain and the Portuguese knows well that they must be resolved quickly, otherwise getting back into the Champions League places would become even more complicated.
During yesterday’s press conference at Milanello, the Milan coach was asked about the idea that other teams have changed as much as Milan in the summer, but are currently ahead of them in the table.
“I am sure that in the end we will be ahead of some of the teams that are now ahead of us in the standings. But let’s talk about ourselves. We started the pre-season with 15 players and the ‘children’. We went to the USA, things were wonderful,” his response began.
“We started working eight days before the start of the season with the other players, the most influential players of the team who were at the European Championship. And we worked on it for eight days. After that we never had time to train.

“And now, little by little, our training is more video, we are improving. But when you change so much it is more difficult. It doesn’t seem to me that these teams, except Napoli, didn’t have the players in pre-season: those are 4-5 weeks of training that are very important when you change.
“Then one of these teams doesn’t play the Champions League during the week. Napoli has a new coach, but has the whole week to work. Then there are two very strong teams like Inter and Atalanta with the same coach for years. If we only want to look at the result, I’m the first to say that we have to do more.”
Fonseca refuses to be the only scapegoat, in the eyes of the paper, but he is also aware that his Milan can no longer afford any more dropped points if they are to transform what has been a disappointing start domestically.
