Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin found himself in a tricky situation following his team’s hard-fought 3-2 victory over Leganes.
It was a match filled with drama and controversy, particularly due to a contentious refereeing decision that left many questioning the fairness of the outcome.
Lunin’s post-match comments ended up sparking further debate, as his words appeared to suggest that Real Madrid might have benefitted from the referee’s decisions.
During the post-match interview, Lunin acknowledged the challenging nature of the game and implied that Real Madrid should be winning such matches without relying on external factors.
“I don’t want to talk about the referee’s decisions; we have to win these games without help. I mean, we have to solve these games by playing well, playing organized, trying not to concede goals,” he said after the match.
While his intention seemed to be focused on improving Real Madrid’s performance, the way his comments were delivered created a storm of reactions.
Andriy Lunin took to Instagram to gave his side of the story.
The Ukrainian goalkeeper has been residing in Spain since 2018. Despite his lengthy stay in the country, he has not yet fully mastered the Spanish language.
This language barrier has often made it difficult for him to express his thoughts accurately, especially in high-pressure situations where every word is scrutinised.
Following the incident, Lunin took to his Instagram account to clarify his comments and address the criticism he had received.
He admitted that his limited command of Spanish had contributed to the misunderstanding, emphasising that his words were not intended to discredit the team’s performance or suggest that they were unfairly favoured by the referee.
“Trying to take advantage of my lack of command of Spanish doesn’t seem right to me, but I will try to improve. A well-deserved victory yesterday. Hala Madrid,” he wrote.
Despite the unfortunate situation, Lunin’s statement appeared to be an attempt to put the matter to rest and shift the focus back to his performance on the pitch.
The goalkeeper’s honesty about his language struggles also highlighted a challenge that many foreign players face when adapting to a new country and its culture.
