Manchester City returned to winning ways after beating Newcastle United 4-0 in the Premier League at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

After losing 3-2 against Real Madrid in the Champions League in midweek, City gave the impression of returning to their vintage best with a terrific performance against the Magpies.

January signing Omar Marmoush scored a hat-trick in the first half, and James Mcatee added a late fourth as City picked up all three points.

Troy Deeney has kept Marmoush on his Team of the Week and said that the 26-year-old will be an “exceptional” player for Man City.

He said to BBC Sport: “I have said since he joined Man City he would be a good player, and we’re starting to see now that he’s going to be an exceptional player for Man City.

“He has what Kevin de Bruyne and David Silva have in terms of their link-up play. He is so quick and can glide past people. He can also finish. Three goals in 14 minutes gets you in team of the week.”

The new signings have made an impact, with Micah Richards also showering heaps of praise on Nico Gonzalez. Pep Guardiola has described him as “mini-Rodri”.

With this victory, City have jumped to fourth in the Premier League table. They are still showing signs of vulnerability, especially at the back, but one gets the feeling that they will get stronger in the second half of the season.

Marmoush enjoyed a great campaign with Eintracht Frankfurt, and he has taken no time in settling down at his new club. City will face Real Madrid in their next game on Wednesday in the Champions League.
