Trafford opts for No.1 shirt | OneFootball

James Trafford will wear the No.1 shirt for Manchester City.

The 22-year-old English goalkeeper has returned to the Club, having progressed through our Academy before joining Burnley in 2023.

He was a key part of the Clarets’ Championship promotion last term, conceding just 16 goals in 45 games and keeping an English record 29 clean sheets.

With current first team goalkeepers Ederson, Stefan Ortega Moreno and Marcus Bettinelli possessing the No.31, No.18 and No.13 shirts respectively, Trafford takes the traditional shot stopper’s number.

He held the No.1 jersey at Burnley in both of his campaigns there after being No.19 during his successful loan spell at Bolton Wanderers in 2022/23.

Trafford becomes the first man to possess the No.1 shirt since Claudio Bravo left in 2020 while it’s been the choice of many City favourites in the past including Joe Hart, David James, Nicky Weaver and Tony Coton.

Before squad numbers were introduced in the Premier League in 1993, the starting goalkeeper would always don the No.1.

That means all of the iconic City goalkeepers of the past have worn the shirt – including the likes of Joe Corrigan, Bert Trautmann and Frank Swift.
