Ipswich Town’s relegation from the Premier League was confirmed as Newcastle United bolstered their Champions League ambitions with a commanding win at St James' Park.
Ipswich needed to defeat the Magpies and rely on a West Ham loss at Brighton to prolong their slim survival hopes, but those chances took a major hit just before halftime when Ben Johnson received a second yellow card and was dismissed.
Bruno Guimaraes had earlier seen a close-range finish ruled out for a foul on keeper Alex Palmer, but Ipswich’s fragile resistance finally broke deep into first-half stoppage time when Alexander Isak converted from the penalty spot after a VAR check prompted referee Michael Salisbury to consult the pitchside monitor.
Newcastle took full control after the break, and Dan Burn — who also scored in last month’s Carabao Cup final win over Liverpool — made it 2-0 with a powerful header from Kieran Trippier’s arcing cross just 10 minutes into the second half.
Late in the match, substitute Will Osula added a third, nodding in his first-ever Premier League goal with 10 minutes to go, capping a dominant display from the home side.
The victory, marking the return of manager Eddie Howe after a three-match absence due to pneumonia, lifts Newcastle up to third in the table.
