Heung-Min Son could return to Tottenham’s starting lineup as part of an attacking refresh for a friendly meeting with Newcastle on Sunday.
The Lilywhites skipper has only started once this summer as he courts transfer interest from LAFC, but is expected to reenter the fold on return to his home country.
He played just under a quarter of an hour in a midweek friendly win over Arsenal, and is not thought to be prominent in Thomas Frank’s plans for next season. His departure is not unlikely this summer, meaning this friendly could potentially serve as a swansong.
It will be something of a no-brainer to name Son in place of Richarlison, who looked rusty as he missed two huge chances against Arsenal.
Dominic Solanke could make a long-awaited return from an ankle injury after Frank confirmed he was ‘close’ to being match-ready, though he is not likely to be fit enough to start. He last appeared for the club in a 2-0 win over Reading last month.
Frank has little reason to rotate his back line after they battled to an impressive clean sheet in the Arsenal friendly. Djed Spence effectively neutralised Bukayo Saka, while Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero, and Pedro Porro will likely keep their places.
The same can be said of Pape Matar Sarr. The Senegalese is near undroppable having scored three so far in pre-season, including a halfway-line lob in the north London derby.
While Spurs were solid in defence last time out, they were not at their sharpest in attack, and Frank could look to rotate. James Maddison made his injury return off the bench and could slot in higher up the pitch from the off, while Brennan Johnson is also in line for a greater contribution. Whether he is deserving of a start over Mohamed Kudus is up for debate, however.
Wilson Odobert showed flashes of threat against Arsenal, rattling the post in the first half, but should make way for Mathys Tel to get some minutes in the legs.
Destiny Udogie remains sidelined with a knee injury, as does Kota Takai, struck down with a plantar fascia issue.
Predicted Tottenham XI (4-2-3-1): Vicario; Spence, Van de Ven, Romero, Porro; Bergvall, Sarr; Tel, Maddison, Kudus; Son
Injured: Udogie, Dragusin, Takai, Solomon, Kulusevski, Gil
Doubt: Solanke
