Tottenham Hotspur host Crystal Palace in a Premier League London derby on Sunday at 2:15pm.
Tottenham (4-3-3): Vicario; Gray, Danso, Davies, Spence; Kulusevski, Bentancur, Sarr; Odobert, Solanke, Tel.
Ange Postecoglou’s side will be celebrating reaching the Europa League Final after their win over Bodo/Glimt on Thursday. And full focus may be on preparing for that, with nothing to play for in the Premier League.
But that doesn’t mean Tottenham will be happy to let results in the Premier League dip. They must keep momentum going if they are to end their trophy drought.
vs WH – Vicario; Gray, Danso, Davies, Spence; Kulusevski, Bissouma, Sarr; Odobert, Richarlison, Tel. vs BG – Vicario; Porro, Romero, van de Ven, Udogie; Bentancur, Bissouma; Johnson, Kulusevski, Richarlison; Solanke.
Tottenham heavily rotated in their draw against West Ham United last weekend, to allow them to go full strength in the Europa League. And we may see another half-strength team in the Premier League, with Postecoglou surely not wanting to take any injury risks.
Unfortunately, Tottenham don’t have the greatest depth in their squad, so some players will still need to do double duty. Spurs are expected to still be without Son Heung-min, at least from the starting XI, with the South Korean only just returning to training.
James Maddison and Lucas Bergvall are both out for the season due to injury, with Radu Dragusin another long-term absentee. So the midfield options are thin, with Dejan Kulusevski likely to start again, alongside Rodrigo Bentancur and Pape Sarr.
In attack, Mathys Tel and Wilson Odobert are good rotational options on the wing, with Dominic Solanke keeping his place through the middle.
We may see the same backline that started against West Ham, though, meaning Pedro Porro drops down to the bench for a rest. Djed Spence will return at left-back in that scenario, with Archie Gray on the right. Ben Davies and Kevin Danso would be the centre-back duo.
Tottenham are in a good position to win a trophy this season. It’d be their first since 2008 and would see Spurs return to the Champions League. But, he will still come under criticism for Tottenham’s performances across the campaign as a whole.
Tottenham have lost 19 of their 35 Premier League games this season, winning just 11. It leaves them 16th, 14 points outside the top half of the table. And former Manchester United defender Gary Pallister believes Postecoglou will leave Tottenham this summer, regardless of the Europa League Final result.
“Ange Postecoglou will be leaving Tottenham, even if they win the Europa League. Ending their long trophy drought won’t be enough,” Pallister told William Hill.
“While the fans admire Postecoglou’s character, his personality, and the way he refuses to give in to pressure, that might not be enough to keep him in the job.
“He’s in a different position compared to Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim. Ange has had more time to bring in the players he wants and to put his stamp on the team. Given that, you wouldn’t expect Tottenham to be in the position they currently find themselves in.”
