A fantastic defensive display kept a fearsome team, and crowd, at bay

Tottenham beat Eintracht Frankfurt 1-0 in their Europa League quarter-final decider to set up a meeting with Lazio or Bodo/Glimt in the last-four and relieve the pressure on head coach Ange Postecoglou.

Dominic Solanke coolly converted the winner from the penalty spot late in the first half after James Maddison was clattered by goalkeeper Kaua Santos.

Spurs had chances to double their lead in the second half, with Cristian Romero and Rodrigo Bentancur both going close with headers, but had to withstand a late barrage from the hosts who missed a succession of chances to win the game.

Here’s how we rated the Spurs players...

Guglielmo Vicario 8

Made a smart late save to deny deny Fares Chaidi and preserve Spurs’ lead.

Pedro Porro 7

His set-pieces were quality, including corners which led to great chances for Romero and Bentancur.

Cristian Romero 8

Snuffed out a number of Frankfurt attacks and his brave passing was an asset.

Saved his side’s skin when he raced back to challenge Hugo Ekitike in the first half. Made several important interventions.

Destiny Udogie 7

Drove forward in possession and popped up in some dangerous positions in the final third, justifying his selection ahead of Djed Spence. He was, though, beaten in the air for a number of crosses.

Rodrigo Bentancur 7

Mopped up well at the base of midfield. Headed over a great chance for 2-0 from Porro’s corner.

Lucas Bergvall 7

Not at his bravest or most dynamic, but added thrust to the midfield and was important defensively.

James Maddison 6

Won the penalty after being clattered by Santos but was unable to continue. Had been growing in influence before the goal after a slow start.

Brennan Johnson 6

Offered limited threat in the final third but created a good chance for Mathys Tel in the first half and linked up well with Kulusevski.

Mathys Tel 7

Produced probably his liveliest appearance for the club, justifying his selection. Tested Santos with a 25-yard drive and looked to make things happen.

Dominic Solanke 7

Coolly dispatched the spot-kick for his first goal in 12 games. Often isolated bnut worked relentlessly as usual.

Subs

Dejan Kulusevski (Maddison 46’) 6

Looked rusty but was a threat on the counter-attack in the second half and held up the ball well.

Pape Matar Sarr (Tel 79’) 6

Added some fresh legs to the midfield for Frankfurt’s late onslaught.

Kevin Danso (Johnson 85’) 7

Helped Spurs to see out the game camped in their own box.

Not used: Austin, Whiteman, Bissouma, Richarlison, Gray, Spence, Odobert, Davies, Moore.
