Tottenham Hotspur Sent Scouts To Monitor This Championship Star: What Should They Do In The Summer?

If a report from the Daily Express is believed to be true, Tottenham Hotspur sent their scouts to Elland Road on Monday night in a high-voltage Championship contest between the league leaders Leeds United and the other promotion aspirants Sunderland. All eyes were on the Black Cats star Jobe Bellingham who has also emerged as a transfer target for Crystal Palace, Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen.

While the Eagles pursued their interest last summer, the big guns of the Bundesliga scouted the 19-year-old midfield ace the previous month. Dortmund, in particular, went through a similar route when they roped in his elder brother Jude from Birmingham City for €30m before sanctioning a staggering €113m transfer to Real Madrid three years later.

Jobe, the England youth international, also progressed through Birmingham City’s academy ranks and eventually earned a first-team role in the middle of the park. The Black Cats snapped him up for a minuscule €1.75m, but they would let him leave for a ‘good price’ as revealed by former talent spotter Mick Brown.

“Crystal Palace and Tottenham have had scouts watching him this season so they’ll be two of the teams in the running if he is going to leave. So it’ll be up to them to assess whether he’s ready to make that jump. From a Sunderland point of view, knowing the way the owners want to operate, I think if they get a huge bid for him then they’ll let him go.“

Brown, who worked as the chief scout at Man United and Blackburn Rovers, told Football Insider.

Why Tottenham Hotspur Must Be Cautious In The Summer

Bellingham has not only shown his versatility in various midfield roles but also featured as a centre-forward at times. However, Régis Le Bris has mostly deployed him from the deep as a ‘double pivot’ or deep-lying playmaker since taking charge of the Wearsiders from July 2024 onwards.

Spurs have witnessed a nightmare amid long-term injuries to several first-team stars. Although they have clinched back-to-back league wins against Brentford and Manchester United to climb up to 12th in the standings, winning the Europa League appears to be the only means to be in Europe next season.

Although the wins have eased the pressure on Ange Postecoglou, the Aussie boss must restore stability having been backed by the signings of Mathys Tel, Kevin Danso, and Antonín Kinský. Teenage pair Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall have flourished in the absence of senior stars, but the Lilywhites should also opt for experience in the summer regardless of Bellingham’s transfer.
