West Bromwich Albion have confirmed the appointment of Ryan Mason as their new head coach, bringing an end to his long-standing affiliation with Tottenham Hotspur. The 33-year-old steps into his first permanent managerial role, taking charge at the Hawthorns on a three-year contract.
Mason departs Spurs, where he was most recently serving as assistant manager, following two stints as interim head coach. His departure was expected, with his contract due to expire at the end of June and no talks planned regarding a renewal.
Mason replaces Tony Mowbray, who left West Brom earlier this year. The Baggies hierarchy have acted decisively, keen to appoint a young and ambitious coach ahead of what they hope will be a promotion-challenging season in the Championship.
West Brom chairman Shilen Patel expressed his belief in Mason’s ability to guide the club into a new era, praising both his character and credentials.
“We have undertaken a thoughtful and expansive search and Ryan always stood out to us among an incredibly strong group of candidates,” Patel said.
“We are excited to have someone whose skillset means he has the aptitude to help us further establish elite standards in both preparation and player development for the first team and across all our team programmes.
“His experiences as both a first team player and coach under some of the game’s most respected minds, along with his time leading academy sides, will be instrumental as we shape a clear philosophy and unified identity at all levels at the Albion.”
Mason’s career trajectory has been deeply entwined with Tottenham Hotspur, where he came through the youth ranks and made over 70 appearances for the first team. His playing days were tragically cut short by a serious head injury in 2017, but he quickly transitioned into coaching and was trusted with the reins at Spurs on two occasions, albeit temporarily.
He was widely respected at Tottenham for his football intellect and communication skills, attributes that West Brom will now look to harness as they seek stability and progress on and off the pitch.
Mason’s decision to step away from Spurs signals his readiness to carve out his own managerial identity. Sources close to the club suggest he had been considering his options for several months and saw West Brom as a platform where he could implement his ideas with long-term backing.
West Brom are aiming for a resurgence after narrowly missing out on promotion last season. Mason’s arrival marks a strategic shift towards youth, tactical innovation and long-term development, echoing the club’s ambition to return to the Premier League with a sustainable plan.
The board’s support for Mason is understood to be comprehensive, and he is expected to be backed in the upcoming summer transfer window as the Baggies prepare for the 2025–26 campaign.
This appointment is not just a change in personnel but a clear statement of intent from West Brom. In Mason, they believe they have found a modern coach with a strong connection to elite football who can help lead the club into its next chapter.
