Spurs have been looking for reinforcements to their backroom team after Chris Davies departed earlier this month to take up the managerial reins at relegated Birmingham in League One.

His place as the senior assistant to head coach Postecoglou has now been taken by Matt Wells, the former academy player and Under-18s boss who returned to Tottenham last year as an assistant having worked with ex-Spurs midfielder Scott Parker at Fulham, Bournemouth and in Belgium with Club Brugge.

Wells initially went back to Tottenham in April 2023 to support Ryan Mason, who took on interim head coaching duties once again following the exit of Antonio Conte’s former assistant Cristian Stellini.

He remained at the club under Postecoglou and now replaces Davies, who had joined Spurs last summer as the Australian’s top assistant and stayed put amid interest from Championship side Swansea in December before eventually departing for St Andrew’s earlier in June.

In addition to Wells’ promotion, Tottenham have also confirmed the arrivals of two new backroom staff members in Nick Montgomery and Sergio Raimundo, both of whom join as assistants to Postecoglou.

Former Scotland Under-21 international Montgomery has been out of work since being sacked as manager of Scottish Premiership club Hibernian after only eight months in charge last month.

The 42-year-old previously won the A-League title in Australia with Central Coast Mariners, having done likewise as a player following a long spell at Sheffield United.

Portuguese coach Raimundo worked closely alongside Montgomery at both Hibs and Central Coast Mariners, having previously had roles in the Benfica academy as well as in Senegal, Brazil, Canada and Austria.

“I’m delighted that Matt has been appointed Senior Assistant Coach. He’s an outstanding young coach who has a great work ethic and attention to detail. He thoroughly deserves this opportunity,” said Postecoglou, whose backroom team at Tottenham also includes former Crystal Palace stalwart Mile Jedinak and goalkeeping coach Rob Burch.

“It’s also great to have Nick and Sergio join the Club, and they will add to the talented coaches we already have on the staff here.

“Both Nick and Sergio have a wealth of coaching experience over a number of years. They have already demonstrated a strong desire to both develop young talent and implement a football style that I believe will further strengthen the environment we have established. I’m looking forward to working with them.”
