Wrexham have reportedly made an approach to sign Tom Cairney for next season.
Tom Cairney has hinted that he wants to remain with Fulham amid contract interest from Wrexham.
It was reported earlier this month by The Telegraph that the newly promoted Championship side have made an approach to sign the 34-year-old this summer.
Phil Parkinson is hoping to strengthen his first-team squad for life in the second tier after earning a third promotion in a row with the Red Dragons.
Cairney is currently out of contract with Fulham, so could depart the Cottagers at the end of the campaign unless an extension agreement is reached.
Cairney has hinted that he would like to remain with the London outfit for at least another year ahead of this weekend’s final home fixture of the season, despite Wrexham interest.
The Scotland international has featured 24 times for Marco Silva’s side in the league this year, but has started on just two occasions, although he scored in their 3-2 win over Brentford on Sunday.
“Nothing is sorted yet,” said Cairney to BBC Sport via The Standard.
“Next week is my final game for Fulham. Hopefully it’s not.
“In football, sometimes things go to the last minute, and hopefully it’s not my final time at Craven Cottage next weekend.”
This could prove a blow for the Welsh outfit, who are hoping to boost their squad in order to survive in the Championship next year.
Wrexham are hoping to continue their ambitious efforts to climb the English football pyramid, having been in the National League as recently as 2023.
It is likely to be a busy summer transfer window for the club, as they prepare for life in the Championship, with talkSPORT even reporting that an offer of £50,000 per week has been made to the Premier League player.
But it remains to be seen whether a deal for Cairney can progress amid these comments about his Fulham future.
It is clear that Cairney would like to remain at Fulham for at least another season, which is a blow to Wrexham.
However, these comments also indicate that he is no closer to remaining at Craven Cottage, as this is him applying public pressure on the club to agree to a new contract.
So there is a positive that the newly promoted Championship club can take from this, as the door is still open to a deal.
If he does end up leaving Fulham, then a move to Wrexham could be very tempting, especially given the money reportedly on offer.
