As reported by L’Équipe and Fabrizio Romano Olympique de Marseille are interested in bringing US international Timothy Weah back to Ligue 1. Whilst no formal offer has yet been made for the Juventus man, the 24-year-old is understood to be keen on the club’s sporting project, according to a report from La Provence. Les Phocéens do however face competition from the Premier League in the form of Leeds United. The winger who can also play as a wing-back has made 78 appearances for the Serie A side but could be on the move this summer, with Marseille in the market for offensive reinforcements following the departure of Luis Henrique to Internazionale Milan. Weah could also be an option to strengthen both at full-back – where Amir Murillo remains the only specialist – and further up the pitch, where Mason Greenwood currently lacks a natural deputy. Weah’s adaptability is part of the appeal: he can play as a right-back, wing-back, or winger, and has even filled in centrally at times. His signing would dovetail with that of Facundo Medina, another potential recruit envisioned as a hybrid left-sided centre-back/left-back in Roberto De Zerbi’s system.Despite establishing himself under Max Allegri, Weah saw his playing time drop following the appointment of Igor Tudor in March. Over two seasons in Turin, he made 78 appearances, scoring 7 goals and assisting 7 more. Still, his CV includes stints with PSG, Celtic, and Lille – where he won Ligue 1 in 2021 – and now includes Champions League and international experience. He was part of the US squad eliminated at the round of 16 in last month’s Club World Cup, though made only one appearance.Weah, the son of Ballon d’Or winner and former Marseille striker George Weah, is well-known in France, having come through the PSG youth ranks before breaking through at Lille. A move to the Vélodrome would see him reunite with former teammates Angel Gomes and Adrien Rabiot.Juventus are reportedly open to selling, having accepted a €14m offer from Nottingham Forest in June that was turned down by the player himself. While Marseille have not yet submitted a bid, talks could accelerate in the coming days following the imminent arrival of Medina.GFFN | George Boxall
