Dani Olmo’s recent season at Barcelona was spectacular, yet challenging at the same time with different factors leaving different interpretations of his campaign.

From a purely sporting front, the player was in great touch and a genuine match-winner for the Catalans as he came clutch and scored vital goals across competitions for Hansi Flick’s side.

His regular injuries, however, were problematic in the manager’s planning. Concurrently, administrative and financial hiccups left his registration under threat for long periods and thus made his situation complicated.

A year down the line, the overall verdict over Olmo’s season is undoubtedly positive but the club have a big decision to make regarding whether to cash in on him at a time of desperate financial constraints.

Here are three reasons Barcelona should consider selling the Spanish international this summer.

A player with abundant interest

Barcelona’s recent season has left several of their players in demand on the market, however, there are few the club can actually consider transferable. After all, most over-performing stars are irreplaceable in Hansi Flick’s squad.

Dani Olmo, on that front, is one player the club can deem transferable, especially given the interest he has accumulated on the market front.

The attacking midfielder has attracted interest from several top European clubs in recent years and was linked to a plethora of destinations before his move to Barcelona last summer including Bayern Munich, Manchester City, and Chelsea.

One year and a good season later, it is clear that there is still significant interest in the player from external clubs and that the club can make good money if they sell him.

With the finances still far from sound and the administration in need of a big sale to bring in the new transfer targets, selling Olmo for a sum of close to €60 million would be great business for the greater good.

Sufficient depth

A key consideration before selling any player after the season Barcelona have had is the depth in the department, and Olmo’s position in the attacking midfield is well covered in that front.

Fermin Lopez’s performances last season leave the manager with a world-class attacking midfielder regardless of Olmo’s presence and the likes of Gavi and Pedri can also play in the position on need.

Further, the club’s plan to sign Nico Williams leaves a great chance of Raphinha moving into a central role next season, providing one more reason why Olmo may become less of a necessity.

Given the pre-existing depth, sacrificing the player may thus prove to be a sensible decision regardless of his blatantly obvious world-class quality.

Woeful injury record

The biggest argument one can have against Olmo after his recent season, needless to say, is his woeful injury record – something the player has been carrying the weight of for several seasons now.

When fit, Olmo is quite clearly one of the best in the world in his position. The issue, however, is that he is quite often left out on the sidelines with minor injuries leaving him recovering his match fitness for longer than he actually stays in his prime.

The long and challenging calendars in today’s world demand clubs like Barcelona to prioritize fitness over anything else, and cashing in on Olmo while the market is still ripe would thus be a great move.

After all, they do have players who can provide more consistency and are less injury-prone in the same department.
