The – some German footballing figures have argued – far too long swan song for Bayern Munich’s Thomas Müller has at long last come to an end. A 0-2 defeat to PSG in the 2025 Club World Cup quarterfinal saw Müller remove his FCB tricot for the last time. In his final pitch-side interview with German broadcaster DAZN, however, Müller could simply not escape the question of whether he might continue to play for Bayern after all.
Jamal Musiala’s horrendous injury in the match actually led to Müller being asked if he might remain with Bayern in Musiala’s absence. Müller tried to be polite, saying he didn’t necessarily find the question “distasteful“, but that it made him feel “uncomfortable”. The 35-year-old was a bit more forceful when speaking in the mixed zone afterwards.
When it came to questions about his future, Müller remained focused on the result. There would be no talk of whether his move to LA Galaxy – something club legend Uli Hoeneß recently expressed his own distaste for – would be going through soon.
A true competitor to the very end, Müller spoke of his feelings on being eliminated from his final tournament with the only club he’s ever represented. The German footballing legend ended up playing only ten minutes as a late substitute.
“We were so focused on advancing here, and now it’s just turned out this way. We have to process that first,“ Müller said. ”It’s always a very strange situation in these tournaments: you actually assumed you were going back to the hotel, to base camp, to prepare for the next round. And now you’re going there to pack your bags. That has to sink in a bit first.
”We had two offside goals and lots of situations where we were just a touch off,” Müller continued. “At the end, it got really wild, even unfair, and things got a little too heated. With eleven against nine, we would have had a good chance in extra time.“
