Real Madrid booked their place in the finals of the UEFA Champions League after securing a comeback 2-1 win over Bayern Munich (4-3 on aggregate) at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Having fallen behind to an Alphonso Davies screamer in the second period, Real Madrid produced a stunning remontada with a brace from Joselu settling things in their favour.

However, there was a moment of controversy in the dying stages of the game when Bayern Munich thought they had equalised through Matthijs de Ligt, only to learn that the referee had blown the whistle for offside seconds before.

As such, the goal did not stand, much to the fury of De Ligt and the rest of the Bayern Munich camp.

Speaking to the media after the game, the Bayern Munich defender was angry at the refereeing mistake and called the decision ‘shameful’ while also admitting that the linesman had said sorry for raising his flag for offside.

“The last play? We all know the rules. If there is a possible offside you have to let the game go on. This was shameful. The linesman said he was sorry and that it was a mistake,” said De Ligt (h/t MARCA).

“With Joselu’s goal (the second) he did let play go on and with ours he didn’t,” insisted the 24-year-old Dutchman.

However, De Ligt credited Real Madrid for their fight and performance after going behind, saying:

“It’s unbelievable. It’s easy to talk about the referee, but in the end they deserved it.”

“We had it very close. You go from winning to losing in ten minutes. We were very close to the final, they’ve pulled away and put the pressure on,” he added.

“Madrid when you think they are dead have one last gasp. That’s why they have won the Champions League 14 times; that makes the difference.”
