Press conference ahead of the game at home to FC St. Pauli

FC St. Pauli travel to Bremen for SV Werder’s penultimate home fixture of the season, with kick-off scheduled for 17:30 CEST on Sunday, 27.04.2025. The Green-Whites are looking to channel the same efficiency they demonstrated in the reverse fixture in order to keep their winning streak going. Head coach Ole Werner spoke in his press conference on Friday about…

... the departure of Oliver Burke: “He has decided to take a different path to us, which Clemens informed me of. We would have liked to continue working with him but these sorts of decisions are just part of football. It is what it is. This time period is decisive for determining which players stay on and have contracts extended etcetera. However, that does not impact performances, neither his nor that of the team.”

… opponents St. Pauli: “They don’t give a lot away as a team. They operate in a disciplined fashion and as a compact unit. Their thinking is always clear and they are tricky to get the better of as a result. Therefore, it is essential that we take our chances and demonstrate the same effectiveness as we did in the reverse fixture, while also giving away as little as possible at the other end.”

… the friendly relationship with St. Pauli: “We already experienced the atmosphere which can develop when these two teams face off in the reverse fixture. I view that as a really positive thing. They are a likeable club and one that has made great steps forward in sporting terms. Their admirers extend beyond just us in Bremen. However, that doesn’t detract from our desire for three points on Sunday.”

… Derrick Köhn: “He gives us a lot for us which has been clear to see in the past, but Felix Agu has also been doing really well in that position until now. Competition for places may have meant that he has somewhat fallen behind in the pecking order but that’s due to the fact that others are performing better right now. It remains to be seen if he will be here next season.”

????️ Werner on the opponent: "St. Pauli have come a long way in terms of sporting success. They don’t give much away, closing off space very quickly and operating as a unit, which sets them apart from teams with greater individual quality. They are tricky to get the better of." #werder #svwfcsp[image or embed]— SV Werder Bremen EN (@en.werder.de) 25 April 2025 at 12:55

… the league table situation: “We are in a good position and have done a good job over the course of the season; although, our standing can still be improved and only three points can really change things now. My primary focus remains on the upcoming opponent, St .Pauli.”

… the recent winning streak: “Each win instils us with further energy and confidence but the reasons for each victory come down to the individual matches. We obviously alter our work in training to prepare for the upcoming opposition. However, the fact we won the previous game does not mean we will win the next. Internally, we look at what could have been done better in each fixture, as was the case for the Bochum game.”
